Be Seen on Shorter Days: High-Visibility Cycling Jerseys and Colors That Stand Out

In daylight, fluorescent yellow, lime and orange are the colors drivers notice first, so a neon jersey is a smart pick for fall rides. Once the sun goes down, jersey color counts for much less. Lights and reflective material are what show up in headlights, and you need both when daylight saving time ends on November 1.

In short

  • In daylight, fluorescent yellow, lime and orange are the colors drivers pick out first.
  • After dark, jersey color does little. Lights and reflective material do the work.
  • Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, so many after-work rides finish at dusk.
  • Our High Viz collection has neon long sleeve jerseys for fall, plus brighter prints.

What colors make a cyclist most visible?

Fluorescent colors. A Cochrane review of 42 studies on how drivers detect people on foot and on bikes found that fluorescent yellow, orange and red improved detection during the day. Those dyes look brighter than ordinary colors in daylight, which is why road crews and crossing guards wear them.

Plain bright colors help too, though less. A white or pale jersey stands out against a dark hedge, and a red one pops against green fields. Black, navy and dark gray are the hardest to pick out, especially against a shaded road.

Background matters as well. Few riders think about it, but a lime jersey on a road lined with fall leaves stands out more than an orange one, and orange wins on a gray, wet day. If you ride the same route most weeks, choose the color that contrasts with it.

For a closer look at what each jersey color means in racing, see our guide to cycling jersey colors.

Do bright jerseys help on dark evenings?

Only a little. The same Cochrane review found that what helped drivers see people at night was lamps, flashing lights and retroreflective material, the kind that bounces headlight beams straight back to the driver. Reflective strips on moving parts of the body, such as ankles and knees, worked especially well because the motion reads as a person.

The Wikipedia article on high-visibility clothing reports a 2009 Australian study in which fluorescent vests without reflective stripes were no real improvement on black clothing at night. Fluorescent color needs daylight to glow. Headlights do not give it much to work with.

What helps drivers see a cyclist in daylight and after dark Two panels. In daylight, fluorescent yellow, lime and orange jerseys stand out most, and a dark jersey blends in. After dark, jersey color does little: a white front light, a red rear light and retroreflective material on the ankles, legs or wrists are what show up in headlights. Daylight Fluorescent color does the work After dark Lights and reflective material do the work Lime Orange Dark stands out stands out blends in Best: fluorescent yellow, lime, orange or red Still add a daytime rear light on gray days Front light Rear light Reflective bands Reflective material on ankles, legs or wrists moves as you pedal and catches headlights A fluorescent jersey alone does little at night

So think of your kit in two layers. The jersey covers the daylight part of the ride. For dusk and dark, add a white front light, a red rear light and something reflective that moves, such as ankle bands or reflective details on gloves and shoe covers. None of this guarantees that a driver sees you, but each piece gives them a better chance.

Can you cycle at night after the clocks change?

Yes, plenty of people do, and the clock change makes it hard to avoid. Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday in November at 2:00 a.m., which this year is November 1. From that evening, sunset comes an hour earlier on the clock, so a ride that left after work in daylight in October now ends in the dark.

A few habits make night rides easier:

  • Run lights from the start of the ride, not from the moment it feels dark. Dusk is when drivers struggle most.
  • Swap dark sunglasses for clear or light lenses, which is what "night cycling glasses" usually means.
  • Pick lit, familiar roads and paths for the first few weeks.
  • Tell someone your route if you ride alone.

Many states have rules about lights at night, so check what yours requires before the first dark commute.

Which high viz cycling jerseys do we have?

Our High Viz collection holds the brightest designs in the store, and the Yellow collection is worth a look if you like yellow in a print rather than a solid block.

For fall, start with long sleeves. The Men's High Viz With Black Accent Long Sleeve Cycling Jersey comes in Lime, Yellow, Green, Orange and Pink, and there is a women's version in a women's cut. The men's product page offers it with or without a winter thermal fleece lining. It uses quick-dry, moisture-wicking polyester with three reinforced rear pockets, a full-length hidden zip and a silicone gripper at the hem, in sizes XXS-7XL. Neither page mentions reflective details, so pair it with the lights and bands above for evening rides.

If you prefer a print, the Men's High Viz White Polka Dots on Orange jersey keeps a lot of bright orange on show.

Searching for our High Viz Color Triangles jersey? It is now called the Men's High Viz Funky Triangles Short Sleeve Cycling Jersey. It is a busy pattern of colored triangles on a black, green, pink or purple base. Great for being noticed at the café, though a solid neon jersey does more on the road in daylight.

Every jersey is made to order. Our sizes run small, so check the size chart and size up if you are between sizes.

Does a bright club kit help a group ride?

One bright club kit makes the whole group easy to count.

My read is that it helps the group look like a group. A line of riders in the same bright jersey reads as one unit from a distance, and a driver behind can see where it starts and ends. Orange, lime and yellow work well for this, and white panels keep the design from looking like a work vest.

If your club is choosing a new kit before winter, put a bright color on the back and shoulders, since that is what a driver approaching from behind sees. A dark design with a small bright logo does far less in daylight.

What should you wear with a high viz jersey this fall?

Black bibs or bib tights are the easy match. They hide road grime, and the jersey stays the brightest thing on you. On colder mornings, a base layer under a long sleeve jersey keeps the bright color on top instead of hidden under a dark jacket. Our temperature guide has the layers for each range in °F.

Add bright gloves, since your hands signal turns, and a bright cap or helmet if you have one. For evening rides, reflective ankle bands are the cheapest upgrade there is.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most visible color for cycling?

In daylight, fluorescent yellow, lime and orange. At night, color matters far less than lights and reflective material.

Do high viz jerseys work at night?

Not much on their own. Fluorescent color needs daylight. After dark, use a white front light, a red rear light and reflective details that move, such as ankle bands.

When do I need lights on my bike?

Whenever you ride after sunset or in poor light. Many states have rules about this, so check yours. Lights in daytime on gray days are a good habit too.

Are your high viz jerseys reflective?

The product pages do not list reflective details. Treat them as daylight jerseys and add reflective accessories for evening rides.

What happened to the High Viz Color Triangles jersey?

It is still in the store under a new name, the Men's High Viz Funky Triangles Short Sleeve Cycling Jersey.

Do I need to size up?

Our sizes run small. Check the size chart against your own measurements and size up if you are between sizes.
