How to Pack Cycling Kit for a Trip: Rolling, Packing Lists and Washing on the Road
Pack one full cycling kit per riding day, or one for every two days if you can wash it in the sink and hang it overnight. Roll jerseys and bib shorts instead of folding them and keep the chamois flat. For a fall trip, add arm warmers, a long sleeve jersey and a light base layer.
In short
- Pack one kit per riding day, or one per two days if you can wash and dry overnight.
- Roll jerseys and bibs instead of folding them. Keep the chamois flat.
- For fall, add arm warmers, a long sleeve jersey and a base layer.
- Wash in the sink with cold water and hang to dry. No radiators or hair dryers.
How many cycling kits should you pack for a trip?
Count riding days, then decide whether you will wash on the road. Bib shorts matter most, because a chamois should never go on twice without a wash. Jerseys and socks are more forgiving, and a jersey can often do two days if it gets a rinse in between.
| Trip | Bibs or shorts | Jerseys | Socks | Layers for fall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend, 2 riding days | 2 | 2 | 2 pairs | Arm warmers, 1 long sleeve jersey |
| 3 to 4 riding days | 2, washed in between | 2 or 3 | 3 pairs | Arm and leg warmers, 1 long sleeve, base layer |
| A week, 5 to 7 riding days | 3, washed in rotation | 3 | 4 pairs | Arm and leg warmers, 1 long sleeve, base layer, cap |
Two pairs of bibs on a weekend means you never pull on damp ones. On longer trips three pairs in rotation give each pair a full day to dry. A matching set such as the Men's Ride Free Sunset 2 Piece Cycling Kit or the Women's Ride Free Sunset 2 Piece Cycling Kit counts as one day's kit, and our cycling kits collection has many more designs to mix and match.
How do you fold a cycling jersey?
Roll it. A rolled jersey takes less space, creases less and is easy to pull out of a bag without unpacking everything else.
- Lay the jersey flat, front down, and close the zip. A closed zip keeps the front straight and stops the teeth catching on other kit.
- Fold both sleeves across the back. The jersey becomes a long rectangle about as wide as the body.
- Roll it tightly from the hem up to the collar. The back pockets end up on the outside, so you can tuck small things like a buff or a gel into them.
If you prefer folding, fold the sleeves in, then fold the jersey in half from hem to collar and once more. Avoid sharp creases across a printed chest panel if the bag will be squeezed for days.
How do you pack bib shorts without crushing the chamois?

Lay the bibs flat, fold the straps down over the chamois, then fold each leg in over the pad and roll loosely from the waist. The pad stays flat in the middle of the roll, which is gentler than squashing it under a heavy shoe.
A few habits help on any trip:
- Pack each day's kit as one roll (bibs, jersey and socks together), so the morning is one grab.
- Keep the kit near the top of the bag, away from shoes, tools and anything oily.
- Carry a mesh laundry bag for used kit, so it can breathe instead of sitting in a closed plastic bag.
- Bring your own small bottle of liquid detergent. Hotel soap often has added oils or scent.
What should you pack for a fall cycling trip?

Fall mornings can start cold and turn warm by lunch, and the days get shorter as November comes. Layers you can take off and stuff into a pocket do more than one heavy jacket.
Cycling arm warmers are the first thing to pack. The Unisex Neon Hexagon Cycling Arm Warmers have a silicone gripper to stop them sliding down, and they roll into a back pocket once the sun is up. For your legs, the Unisex Arrow Speed Cycling Quick Dry Cycling Leg-Warmers have a zip at the ankle, so you can take them off over your cycling shoes at a café stop.
Pack one long sleeve cycling jersey for the coldest morning and a light cycling base layer. The Men's Basics Lightweight Mesh Cycling Base-Layer adds a light extra layer under a jersey without adding bulk, and it weighs next to nothing in the bag. Our what to wear by temperature guide helps you match layers to the forecast.
Socks are easy to forget and easy to replace badly. Cycling socks such as the Unisex Six Stripe Mid Length Cycling Socks are nylon and elastane, which dries much faster than cotton after a sink wash. More pairs are in our cycling socks collection.
How do you wash cycling kit on a trip?

In the sink, straight after the ride. Fill it with cold water and a little liquid detergent, turn the kit inside out and press the chamois a few times to push the water through it. Rinse until the water runs clear, then squeeze, never wring.
Roll each piece in a dry towel and press down on the roll. That takes out most of the water, and the kit dries much faster. Hang it on a hanger or over a chair in a room with air moving. A thin jersey hung like this is often dry by morning, while the chamois takes longer, which is why a second pair of bibs is worth the space.
Keep heat away from it. Radiators, heated towel rails and hair dryers do the same damage as a tumble dryer to elastic, silicone grippers and gel pads. Our care lines say machine wash at 30°C (86°F) and do not dry clean or iron, and the socks are not for the dryer either. The full routine is in our beginner kit and washing guide.
What goes in your jersey pockets on a ride day?
Most cycling jerseys have three back pockets, and the kits above have three reinforced stitched ones. Spread the weight: heavy things in the middle, light things at the sides.

- Middle pocket: phone, in a zip bag if rain is possible, and a little cash or a card.
- Left pocket: food for the ride and a gel for the last hour.
- Right pocket: arm warmers or a cap once they come off, plus a small rain layer if the forecast is mixed.
Tools such as a spare tube, a mini pump and a multi-tool can go in a saddle bag so the pockets stay light. Our older weekend ride checklist covers the bike side of the preparation.

Frequently asked questions
How many cycling kits do I need for a week of riding?
Three pairs of bibs and three jerseys, washed in rotation, cover most weeks. Pack one kit per day if you will not be able to wash on the road.
Should I roll or fold cycling clothes?
Roll them. Rolled kit takes less space and creases less. Keep the chamois flat in the middle of the roll.
Can I wash bib shorts in a hotel sink?
Yes. Use cold water and a little liquid detergent, rinse well, press the water out in a towel and hang them to dry. Keep them away from radiators and hair dryers.
How long does cycling kit take to dry after a sink wash?
It depends on the room. A thin jersey is often dry overnight, and bib shorts take longer because of the chamois, so a second pair is worth packing.
What should I pack for a cycling weekend in the fall?
Two kits, arm warmers, a long sleeve jersey and, if you get cold easily, leg warmers and a light base layer.
